Stabilisation of the paraglider in case of collapses



It is about the safety of paragliders. Again and again serious accidents happen due to so-called "collapses". The paraglider suddenly collapses while flying and the danger of a difficult-to-control flight condition increases. The idea is based on opening the collapsed glider again in time.

The invention allows the chambers between the upper and lower sail to be inflated with compressed air. In this way, the paraglider is quickly reopened and brought into a safe shape to stabilise the flight.

Short description of the invention

This is how the invention works: Air chambers are sewn or inserted into the outer contours and/or cross braces of the paraglider.

In an emergency, these air chambers are then to be abruptly filled with air and/or a suitable gas in such a way that the paraglider erects or unfolds again as quickly as possible. Thanks to this invention, the paraglider is quickly manoeuvrable again even in tricky situations.

The mechanism can be triggered manually or automatically (via status monitoring of sensors directly on the paraglider), e.g. by a small compressed air bottle or similar.

Advantages of the invention



The paraglider opener prevents so-called "collapses" and thus the danger of a flight condition that is difficult to control.

The mechanism ensures that a front side and/or at least one outer longitudinal side of the upper sail and/or the lower sail includes a pressurised gas chamber that can be filled with pressurised gas, which is activated in an emergency and stabilises the flight.

In this way, paragliding flights will take place with increased safety in the future.


The manual handling of the invention would be conceivable, for example, by means of a kind of rip cord, which the pilot actuates when required. This is done when a side collapse begins, whereby the valve for the outflow of compressed gas from the compressed gas cylinder into the associated compressed gas chamber is opened by actuating the ripcord.

The valve closes automatically, for example spring-loaded, after the handle is released.


The paraglider opener can also be implemented with sensor control. In this case, the valve is opened by means of a signal from an electronic sensor control and the pressurised gas chambers fill.

Sensors can be assigned to the paraglider that monitor conditions or changes in condition that indicate a collapse. As soon as limit values are reached, the paraglider opener activates and the pilot is not required to react quickly.

Adjustable application

The pressurised gas chamber is at least partially filled with pressurised gas in the event of an upcoming side collapse or collapse in order to stabilise the paraglider canopy. The filling of pressurised gas can take place intermittently, so that the pressurised gas chamber is filled with several partial volumes, as an early stabilisation of the paraglider canopy in the event of an upcoming collapse can already be sufficient to prevent a further collapse of the paraglider canopy.

There is a whole range of products in the field of rescue equipment and safety features for paraglider pilots whose task is to prevent or at least mitigate paraglider crashes/maintain or regain control over a paraglider in critical situations.

There are known examples of paragliders with inflatable wings (wing parts) which, however, in contrast to the solution according to the invention, have a permanent air filling during flight.

The combination of regulative inflation and rapid securing distinguishes the paraglider opener in threatening situations. Through the use of sensor technology, the flight behaviour of the parachute can also be precisely taken into account and pilot errors can thus also be well avoided.
